Feb 2016 : Report of Post Graduate Quiz

BRIEF WRITE UP 

During the general body meeting which was held in the state level annual conference at AJ Shetty Institute of Medical sciences, Mangalore , Dr Shashikala P , Professor and Head, Department of Pathology agreed to organize & conduct 5th state level intercollegiate post graduate quiz 2016 at SSIMS & RC, Davangere.

The topics for the quiz were decided as “Histotechniques, Cytotechniques & Blood banking” by Dr Shashikala P. These topics were chosen for the quiz ,as it is often neglected by the Post Graduates and have become increasingly sophisticated, incorporating a whole variety of specialities and a corresponding dramatic rise in the level & breadth of knowledge. A sound scientific knowledge about  techniques in histopathology, cytology and blood banking helps in diagnosis and patient care.

The quiz was named “Paramita” meaning perfection in Sanskrit which is expected from all Pathologists in technical skills like histotechniques , cytotechniques & blood banking.

The quiz was conducted on the 27th February,2016 which was inaugurated by Dr B S Prasad, Principal, Dr Shashikala P, gave the preamble, Dr Kavitha GU gave the welcome speech, Dr Deepti Pruthvi delivered Vote of thanks

A total of 28 teams from 15 colleges participated in the preliminary MCQs round which consisted of 70 questions on all 3 topics.

The top 6 teams were selected on the basis of the marks scored in the preliminary round & were named as Makroo, Dacie, Lynch, Henry, Culling and Bancroft. Two teams were from KIMS, Hubli, One from BIMS, Belgaum, one from ESI, Bangalore, One from JJMMC, Davangere, One from BM Patil college, Bijapur. Post Graduates from KIMS Hubli topped the written MCQs round. The final round comprised of 8 rounds.

The first round was a ‘Identify & color me – special stain round’. Second round was ‘Pick the reagents used in special stain’ followed by Super 6 round and a riddle round which were conducted by Dr Shashikala P. Fifth & Sixth rounds were on Blood bank instruments and Q&A  which were conducted by Dr Kavitha GU & Dr Ganga S.Pilli, Professor of pathology, JNMC, Belgaum respectively. Seventh and eighth rounds were visual & oral rapid fire rounds were conducted by Dr Shashikala P.

There was a tie between ESI, Bangalore & BIMS, Belgaum teams after the final rapid fire roundwith a score of 295 each. The tie breaker was again a written round of 5 questions on blood banking. After the tie breaker round, ESI medical college Post graduates Dr Ankitha Hebbar, Dr Sandhya Madhu bagged the first place, Post Graduates of BIMS, Belgaum Dr Sadiya Siddika and Dr Praeteeksha Pai secured the second place.
